DutchCulture | Buitengaats: Louis Andriessen's De Materie at Ruhrtriennale 2014

DutchCulture gathers data on international cultural activities from the Netherlands in all creative disciplines. This week's highlight: De Materie

Consisting of four distinct musical essays, De Materie is and was inspired by the concept of 'matter'. The musical style is a synthesis of extremes, incorporating both 'high' and 'low' arts, a feature characteristic of Andriessen’s work.

This first large-scale music theatre work by Dutch composer Louis Andriessen De Materie (1984 – 88) for soloists, narrators, vocalists and large ensemble has not been staged again since its world premiere in Amsterdam in 1989.

On 15 August, De Materie will open the 2014 edition of the Ruhrtriennale in Germany. The Kraftzentrale in Duisburg, the largest venue of the Ruhrtriennale, offers the appropriate framework for the production of this masterwork, staged by director Heiner Goebbels and Ensemble Modern Orchestra.

Further dates are 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24 August.
