Research into urban planning and mangrove coast São Paulo concluded

Metropolitan Ecolution, a project by Dutch architecture firm Volpi Urbane, has recently been concluded. The question that this initiative posed to Dutch and Brazilian architects and representatives was how urban transition and planning can go hand in hand with local ecosystems and biodiversity. The metropolitan area of Baixada Santista, located close to the city of São Paulo in Brazil, was taken as the case study on account of its complex economic, political, social and cultural relations.

Workshops and a symposium held in the period from October to December 2013 gave Dutch representatives an opportunity to share knowledge with Brazilian professionals and representatives of the Brazilian government, on topics such as water management, local ecosystems, and the tension between the coastal nature of mangroves and the growth of the port of Santos.

The project has been supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL.
