Funding for a wide range of projects and cultural activities by Amsterdam-based makers

Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK) is the fund for and of Amsterdam’s cultural sector. It supports all forms of art across every district and neighbourhood, from professional arts to cultural participation, and from established organisations to emerging makers and pioneers.

The Project Subsidies 2026–2028 scheme supports a wide range of cultural projects and activities. Funding is available for projects arising from international collaboration, as well as for the presentation of international work in Amsterdam. The scheme may also support travel abroad when applicants can demonstrate how the trip contributes to their artistic development.

Artists, creators, organisations, and collectives in the municipality of Amsterdam, across all disciplines, genres, and sectors - from beginners to experienced applicants.

Important: you can only apply if you live or work in Amsterdam or surrounding municipalities: Zaanstad, Oostzaan, Landsmeer, Waterland, Haarlemmermeer, Amstelveen, Ouder-Amstel, and Diemen. If you are applying as a foundation or association, your main office (inlcuding statutory seat) must be located in Amsterdam.

AFK supports a wide range of activities such as:

  • art projects that can be seen or experienced in the municipality of Amsterdam such as exhibitions, performances, festivals, community activities and participatory projects, nightlife culture, and visual art in a public space;
  • research and experiment;
  • artistic development for professional artists (replacing the stipend);
  • development of cultuurmakers-organisations;
  • development of visual art in public spaces.

For applications with an international component, the results must be substantially visible or accessible in Amsterdam. You may also apply for support for an international visit that contributes to your artistic development. However AFK does not support projects that are solely focused on promoting Amsterdam-based work internationally.

Applicants can apply for any of these four categories. The amount you request determines the category:

For applications with an international component, applicants should clearly outline the project’s broader financing structure and additional sources of funding.

Requirements
  • Clearly describe what you plan to do, with whom, how, where, and also for whom it’s meant.
  • Clearly explain your artistic or organizational choices and how you plan to carry them out.
  • When your project is based on a social issue, describe how you plan to translate the social mission into an artistic project.
