Mondriaan Fund: Artist Project
The Mondriaan Fund is one of the 6 national cultural funds, and supports and promotes the visual arts and cultural heritage in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
With the Artist Project grant the Mondriaan Fund aims to stimulate talent development by providing visual artists the opportunity to execute an artistic plan that can impact the quality and visibility of contemporary visual arts in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
This grant can be used to help meet the costs of realizing a project, for example, for the execution of a concrete plan for new work, a collaborative engagement, or for travel and work abroad. This might entail a research project, an apprenticeship, or a working period in the Netherlands or abroad.
Visual artists from the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint-Eustatius , Sint Maarten) who want to execute a specific plan, tied to a clearly defined working period within or outside the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This can also be a collaborative project with one or more other artists or mediators. In that case, the collective plan must lead to a single result. For a collaborative project, each participant must submit their own individual application.
To be eligible for a grant, you must be artistically active in the visual arts and in that capacity be embedded in the professional visual arts practice in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. It may not be used while attending educational institutions, such as bachelor’s or master’s degree programmes, or post-academic or post-graduate programmes such as the Rijksakademie, BAK, de Ateliers, the Jan van Eyck Academy or EKWC.
An application for an Artist Project grant can only be submitted by artists who:
- have been working as professional visual artists for at least one year and are registered with the Kamer van Koophandel (KvK, Chamber of Commerce), or
- have completed higher professional education (HBO) in the visual arts for at least 3 years and have been working as a professional visual artists for at least 1 year, or
- have been working as professional visual artists for 3 years or more.
The grant can not be used to help meet the costs of realizing this project, for example, for the execution of a concrete plan for new work, a collaborative engagement, or for travel and work abroad. This might entail a research project, an apprenticeship, or a working period in the Netherlands or elsewhere.
The grant can not be used
- to finance study (bachelor’s or master’s degree programmes as well as post-academic or post-graduate programmes)
- for work done for an organisation, regular work activities, exhibition costs or other costs of presenting the artist’s work;
- for regular costs, such as ongoing housing expenses;
- to put previously produced work back into production, to frame it or transfer it to a different medium;
- for a working period in a guest studio in the Netherlands or abroad if this studio is offered in the Mondriaan Fund’s Residency programme;
- for publications, except for artist’s book, on condition that it is a special publication that is an autonomous work of art in its own right and is produced in an edition of no more than three copies.
The amount of the stipend depends on your plan
- A fixed amount for a working period in the Netherlands or abroad, varying from 1 month to a maximum of 6 months. The standard amount is € 2.585 per month;
- A flexible amount is possible for a period of up to 12 months.

- Artists can apply only once every 4 years;
- For the assessment the following criteria are taken into account (go the fund's website for more detailed information);
- The quality and development of the artist's oeuvre;
- The quality of acknowledgement and cultural entrepreneurship;
- The quality of the plan and the approach of the artist to finding an audience for the it's work.
