5 April: FAIR P(L)AY - Fair practices in the cultural sector

Efforts to improve the changeable and often precarious position of professionals in the cultural sector and creative industry are underway in Europe, whether on the national or on the EU level. The COVID-19 crisis had a clear impact on art and culture throughout Europe, and especially on the individual maker. While the infrastructures vary from country to country, several initiatives have been launched throughout Europe over the past years, aiming to raise awareness and establish fair practices among stakeholders.

How to connect these initiatives and ensure that their recommendations are applied within the cultural sector on a European level? What can European institutions learn from it? Furthermore, since digital technologies have transformed the way creative content is produced, distributed and accessed, how do these initiatives take into account the new European Copyright Directive, which Member States are currently in the process of transposing nationally?

These and more questions will be touched upon by an international group of panellists representing various European initiatives advocating for fair practices, as well as a representative of the European Commission.

The first event will take place on 5 April at 15.00 at AMARE, a brand new space in The Hague devoted to arts, home of Nederlands Dans Theater, Residentie Orkest, the Royal Conservatoire and of the former Zuiderstrandtheater.

Leanne Hoogwaerts – Kunsten 92 – Fair Practice Code (NL)

Leanne Hoogwaerts is a policy and project manager at Kunsten ’92, the Dutch association for the cultural and creative sector. Here she focuses on broad cultural policy themes including Europe, heritage, and the Fair Practice Code.

Ingrid Franken – Overleg Kunstenorganisaties (oKo) – Juist is Juist (BE)

Ingrid Franken works as an independent dramaturg, curator and artist, and is a member of FoAM, a transdisciplinary laboratory at the interstices of art, science, nature and everyday life. She worked as a consultant on the charter for fair practices, Juist is juist, developed by oKo for the Flemish artfield.

Anne Lehtelä – Arts Promotion Centre Finland – Reilun Taiteen Manifesti (FI)

Anne Lehtelä works at the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) in the development programme for the working conditions of artists. As a part of her work Lehtelä is managing the Fair Art campaign that was launched in 2020. The Fair Art campaign supports fair pay and practice for artists in different fields of art.

Ida Dojcinovic – European Commission

After specialising in EU law, Ida Dojčinović worked in the Brussels office of an international law firm. Having joined the European Commission in 2017, she now works for the Copyright Unit of the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT).

Caroline Sebilleau – La Buse

La Buse is a working group that shines a light on the abusive practices in the art world works on improving working conditions for all art workers. Caroline Sebilleau joined La Buse in November 2020. As an art worker, the primarily collaborative tools and formats she activates or participates in are those of academic research, editorial and print practices, and exhibition.

Barbara Stacher – European Commission

Barbara works at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education and Culture (DG EAC), in the Cultural Policy Unit. Her field of work is the crossroads of cultural and creative sectors/ industries/spaces and how to contribute in terms of city and regional development, social inclusion, job creation, participation, linking up creative sectors and policy-makers, creative hubs and cultural and creative spaces.

Our moderator the evening is Maciej Hofman – European Cultural Foundation

Maciej Hofman is an independent consultant specialised in culture, cultural heritage & cultural and creative sectors. He is currently busy with advising the European Cultural Foundation on matters related to European Union’s cultural policy and #CulturalDealEU campaign. Prior to going freelance, Maciej worked as a civil servant on the European and national level, a.o. for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education and Culture.

The opening welcome will be given by Jan Zoet, managing director of AMARE and President of Kunsten 92.
