Our Lord in the Attic Museum receives European Heritage Label

Amsterdam’s Our Lord in the Attic Museum (Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder) has been awarded the European Heritage Label. The European Heritage Label is an initiative of the European Commission and is awarded to heritage sites with high symbolic value for Europe. Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder receives the label because the museum's hidden church reflects the importance of tolerance and freedom of conscience. The Award Ceremony will take place on 17 April in Antwerp, in the presence of stakeholders and representatives of all sites with the European Heritage Label.

The hidden church of Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder was built in the 17th century, a time when Europe was plagued by protracted religious wars and intolerance towards non-believers. Religious freedom and freedom of conscience are still represented in Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder. The museum was awarded the European Heritage Label partly because of the way in which the intangible value of heritage is made accessible, for example in the citizenship programme Voices of Tolerance. In Voices of Tolerance, students from secondary schools and colleges discuss tolerance and the religiously diverse society. Through the European Heritage Label, the museum wants to lift the conversation between youngsters to a European level.

With the granting of Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder, five Dutch locations now carry the European Heritage Label: The Peace Palace (2014), Kamp Westerbork (2014), The Maastricht Treaty (2017) and the Colonies of Benevolence (2020).

The European Heritage Label is a recognition for heritage sites that have played a special role in European history and culture or in European integration. The label aims to increase mutual understanding between European citizens and to give European citizens, especially young people, a better understanding of today's Europe and its common cultural heritage.

The European Heritage Label is an initiative of the European Commission. The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands coordinates the European Heritage Label in the Netherlands. DutchCulture handles communications for the Heritage Label in the Netherlands and supervises nominations. The next selection round for organisations that are interested will take place in 2025.

Het Amsterdamse Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder krijgt het Europees Erfgoedlabel toegekend. Het Europees Erfgoedlabel is een initiatief van de Europese Commissie en wordt toegekend aan erfgoedlocaties met grote symbolische waarde voor Europa. Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder ontvangt het label, omdat de schuilkerk van het museum het belang van tolerantie en vrijheid van geweten reflecteert. De Award Ceremonie vindt plaats op 17 april aanstaande in Antwerpen in aanwezigheid van stakeholders en vertegenwoordigers van alle locaties met het Europees Erfgoedlabel.

De schuilkerk van Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder is gebouwd in de 17e eeuw, een tijd waarin Europa werd geteisterd door langdurige godsdienstoorlogen en intolerantie ten aanzien van andersgelovigen. Religieuze vrijheid en vrijheid van geweten zijn nog altijd aanwezig in Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder. Zo heeft het museum het Europees Erfgoedlabel mede ontvangen vanwege de wijze waarop de immateriële waarde van het erfgoed ontsloten wordt, zoals in het burgerschapsprogramma Voices of Tolerance voor vmbo en mbo. In Voices of Tolerance gaan jongeren in gesprek over tolerantie en de religieus diverse samenleving. Vanuit het Europees Erfgoedlabel wil het museum het gesprek tussen jongeren naar een Europees niveau tillen.

Met de toekenning van Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder dragen nu vijf Nederlandse locaties het Europees Erfgoedlabel: het Vredespaleis (2014), Kamp Westerbork (2014), Het Verdrag van Maastricht (2017) en de Koloniën van Weldadigheid (2020).

Het Europees Erfgoedlabel is een erkenning voor erfgoedlocaties die een speciale rol hebben gespeeld in de Europese geschiedenis en cultuur of bij de Europese integratie. Het label moet het wederzijdse begrip tussen Europese burgers vergroten en Europese burgers, in het bijzonder jongeren, meer inzicht geven in het huidige Europa en het gemeenschappelijke cultureel erfgoed.

Het Europees Erfgoedlabel is een initiatief van de Europese Commissie. De Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed coördineert het Europees Erfgoedlabel in Nederland. DutchCulture verzorgt de communicatie voor het Erfgoedlabel in Nederland, en begeleidt de nominaties. De volgende selectieronde vindt plaats in 2025.
