International visitors: Marron delegation Suriname

From 3 to 7 April 2017, a delegation of the Aukan Marron community from Suriname is visiting the Netherlands.

The delegation consists of Ms Fidelia Graand-Galon (Honorary Chair of the Marron Women Network), Mr Wensley Misiedjan (Treasurer of the Association of Aukan Authorities, ‘Vereniging Aukaanse Gezagsdragers’), Mr John Setoe Misiedjan (Member of the cabinet of Chief Bono Velantie) and Mr Johan Djanie (Member of the cabinet of Chief Bono Velantie).

The central themes of the visit are safeguarding the Aukan Marron heritage in Suriname and in the Netherlands, management and presentation of community collections and exchanges between Dutch and Surinamese experts. The visit is jointly hosted by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and DutchCulture, with advise of the Dutch Centre for Intangible Heritage.

The delegation will visit, among others, the Tropen Museum and Imagine IC in Amsterdam, National Archives in The Hague, Verhalenhuis Belvédère in Rotterdam, Textile Museum and Peerke Donders Park in Tilburg and the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem.

On Friday 7 April, from 15:00 to 17:00 hrs, the visitors will discuss their mission and the future of the Aukan Marron heritage at the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem. You are welcome to attend this free event; the event is in Dutch. To register and for more information, please click here.
