An inspirational event with Dutch – Japanese cultural collaborations.

The Netherlands and Japan share more than 400 years’ history of exchange. This exchange resulted in precious cultural heritage that inspire artists, designers and craftsmen from both countries to find each other, work together and continue the mutual inspirations. At the event Outlook: Japan 2020 we will connect the past, the present day and especially the near future of 2020, when Japan will again attract the world’s attention with the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games, and look into new opportunities and challenges for Dutch-Japanese collaboration in the arts and culture field.

Programme

With this programme we want to make contact and exchange ideas with artists and creative professionals working in the Netherlands and Japan, and develop partnerships that can contribute to a stronger Dutch-Japanese network.

Ton van Zeeland, Deputy Head of Public Diplomacy, Political & Cultural Affairs, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tokyo (2015-2019), will be present on behalf of the embassy.

At the event Outlook: Japan 2020 we will discuss the opportunities and challenges by talking about inspiring case studies with the following speakers. The network reception is aimed at furthur inspire each other and to provide the audience and speakers the possibility to make connections and look for opportunities.

Joep van Lankveld

Joep van Lankveld is a paralympic athlete and project employee for Sports Inclusion at the Dutch Olympic Committee (NOC*NSF). His main task is to advise sports clubs how to be more open for everyone. Besides his daily job, he is competing internationally in shooting sports. Van Lankveld will give a speech at Outlook: Japan 2020.

Yusuke Nakajima

Yusuke Nakajima opened his bookstore “POST” in 2011 where he renewes the whole line up of books by publishers regularly. Additionally, one of the sections in Ebisu store permanently shows main line-ups by Steidl, Germany. Currently, as the director of the store he selects books, organizes exhibitions, publications, and coordination of bookshelves at Dover Street Market, Tokyo. Since 2015, he has been a director of Tokyo Art Book Fair, and in 2016, he founded a dummy book award “Steidl Book Award Japan” in collaboration with Steidl. At the event, Nakajima will introduce his organisation, its vision and efforts in bringing people together in Japan.

Olivier Fabre

Olivier Fabre is a third-generation Japanese / European LGBTQ activist and journalist representing Pridehouse Tokyo. Growing up in Japan and coming out later in life, he has dedicated his life to making both Japan and the LGBTQ community in Japan better understood. He has been instrumental in getting over 15 different overseas diplomatic missions in Tokyo in coming together to support Pridehouse Tokyo. Pridehouse Tokyo, which was invited by the City of Amsterdam this year in August to participate in the Canal Pride and has had immense support from the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo, endeavours to bring higher awareness of LGBTQ issues in the sporting world and LGBTQ issues in Japan in general. It has just closed its 2019 chapter for the Rugby World Cup and is preparing for Pridehouse Tokyo 2020 in time for the Summer Olympic and Paralympic games. Fabre will share his story and introduce the activities and aim of Pridehouse Tokyo.

Emiko Chujo

Emiko Chujo lives in Amsterdam since 2000. Chujo founded the company Japan Cultural Exchange (JCE), who have organised many cultural activities since the start in 2015. The annual event MONO JAPAN started in 2016 to introduce a variety of Japanese crafts and design products with the people who create them and their background stories and culture. Many collaborations between the Netherlands and Japan have been initiated with the event. In 2019, MONO JAPAN organised an artist-in-residence program to establish connections and become the actual bridge of the two creative industries craft and design.

Heidi Vogels

Heidi Vogels is a visual artist and filmmaker. She works in long term research-based projects and is currently in the final stages of realizing a documentary film in Fez, Morocco. She is also the coordinator of AIR Platform NL since its beginning in 2003. DutchCulture|TransArtists’ AIR Platform NL is a platform for the mutual exchange of information and experience between AIR organisations in the Netherlands and Flanders, connects AiR initiatives with (international) networks and platforms, and offers practical advice concerning AIR programs to art professionals, funders and policymakers. For many years TransArtists keeps close ties with Air organizers in Japan, which resulted in 2017 and 2019 in an extensive visitors program.
