The Brazilian Institute of Museums was created by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in January 2009. The new institute linked to the Ministry of Culture succeeded the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) in the rights, duties and obligations related to the federal museums.

The institute is responsible for the National Museums Policy and for the improvement of the services of the sector - increasing museum visits and collections, fostering policies for acquiring and preserving collections and creating integrated actions among Brazilian museums. It is also responsible for the direct administration of 30 museums.
