Australia: The World Ended on Mango Street
The World Ended on Mango Street is a documentary by Thomas Watson about his grandmother, Yvonne Holman, a Dutch woman who was imprisoned in a Japanese concentration camp in Indonesia for three years and later migrated to Australia. In Australia, Mrs. Holman raised four children but never shared her story with them or her other relatives, creating an atmosphere of secrecy that deeply affected her family. She passed away in 2013.
It was not until he met filmmaker Jean-Baptiste Brelière that Thomas realised how necessary it was to answer the questions his grandmother had left unanswered. In this documentary, Thomas visits Indonesia and the Netherlands to learn more about her long-kept secret. The World Ended on Mango Street is supported by the Netherlands under the Shared Cultural Heritage grant scheme and is expected to premiere later this year.
