New Minister of Foreign Affairs

King Willem-Alexander has appointed Bert Koenders as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Koenders has considerable foreign policy experience. He was overseas development minister from 2007 to 2010 before joining the UN where he is currently special envoy to Mali.

His predecessor, Frans Timmermans, is to be appointed as Commissioner and First Vice-President of the new European Commission. The King honourably discharged Mr Timmermans on 17 October 2014.
