Dutch cultural export in 2014

Slightly fewer activities than in previous years, but a new country at number one. First impressions from DutchCulture’s Offshore (Buitengaats).

DutchCulture’s Offshore (Buitengaats) has been tracking the international activities of Dutch artists, creative and organisations since 1999, and every year we publish this data in the form of the Offshore Map (Buitengaatskaart).

We have worked out the top 20 countries in advance of the publication of 2014’s Offshore Map. We registered 12,978 activities in 2014, which is a decrease from previous years (13.319 in 2013 and 13.534 in 2012, respectively). This decrease is most likely due to the absence of any major arts manifestations, rather than due to budget cuts in the cultural sector. The Swedish / Dutch bilateral year caused increased traffic to the North.

Music came out top with the most international performances out of all the sectors. This was especially in the pop/dance genre, which is the fastest growing type of music from the Netherlands. This also explains the new number one country: the United States. America has beaten Germany to the top spot, in part thanks to the enormous popularity of Dutch DJ’s in the US. The UK, Belgium and France complete the top 5.

We will publish the Offshore Map for 2014 in May. The design and the graphics have been created by Catalogtree, who also designed 2010’s Offshore Map, made by the former SICA.
