Fertile soil for Dutch-Russian museum exchange

Last April, more than 100 Russian and Dutch museum professionals gathered in Amsterdam. It was the start of a conversation that will continue in 2017.

On 18 and 19 April 2016 the Sustainable Dialogues International Museum Conference for Dutch and Russian museum professionals took place in Amsterdam. More than 100 Russian and Dutch directors and education professionals of the most prominent museums in both countries participated in presentations, study visits, workshops and speed dates.

The central theme of the conference was the sustainable dialogue between museums and the societies they are embedded in. More than 20 follow-up collaborations have either sprouted from this conference or were strengthened during the two day gathering in Amsterdam. The State Russian Museum has invited three Dutch experts from different organizations to join their conference in October and Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven) and National Centre for Contemporary Arts (Nizhny Novgorod) are exploring ways of exchanging work of young Dutch and Russian artists, to name a few of the results.

Dutch and Russian participants have also expressed a warm interest in a second edition of the Sustainable Dialogues International Museum Conference in 2017, which is considered a fertile soil for future cooperation between Dutch and Russian museum professionals.

The Sustainable Dialogues International Museum Conference was organized by DutchCulture, centre for international cooperation, Foundation SAM and ICOM Russia. Hermitage Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, Reinwardt Academy and many other partners in the Netherlands also contributed greatly to this bilateral conference.
