Dutch Actress Hanna van Vliet is Shooting Star at Berlinale 2022
Berlinale’s international jury has selected Hanna van Vliet as one of the ten up-and-coming actresses and actors from Europe to participate in the prestigious annual talent platform. The 25th anniversary edition of European Shooting Stars, which is organised by European Film Promotion, will take place during the 72nd Berlinale. The talent platform will allow the Shooting Stars to meet leading cast agents, producers, filmmakers and journalists, and to build a broad international network.
Van Vliet studied Drama and Contemporary Music Theatre at Amsterdam University of the Arts, where she graduated in 2014. She plays the lead role in the internationally acclaimed drama series ANNE+, which she also co-created. With ANNE+ Van Vliet and her co-creators aim to contribute to positive representation on queer roles, in response to the lack of nuanced queer representation in film. Van Vliet actively participates in the public debate on queer roles, which makes her an advocate for a broad representation of female leads and queer characters in the (Dutch) film and TV landscape.
The series has received two nominations for the Prix Europe award as well as a Golden Calf award for van Vliet as Best Actress in a Drama Series at the Netherlands Film Festival in 2020. A feature version of ANNE+ with van Vliet in the leading role premiered in October 2021. Van Vliet’s career also includes two Musical Award nominations for Fiddler on the Roof and De Tweeling. Her most recent work includes the lead roles in the feature films Quicksand and Lost Transport, due for release in early 2022.
Previous Dutch Shooting Stars include Martijn Lakemeier, Bilal Wahib, Jonas Smulders, Hannah Hoekstra, Reinout Scholten van Aschat, Abbey Hoes, Marwan Kenzari, Sylvia Hoeks, Lotte Verbeek, Halina Reijn and Fedja van Huêt.
