Diyarbakır

Many well known contemporary artists of the last 10 years come from Diyarbakır, a city with a large Kurdish population located in the southeast of Turkey. Even though the art activities and scene is limited, cultural life in the city is diligently maintained due to the efforts of contemporary artists living in the city. There is a lack of contemporary female artist coming from this region. The Diyarbakır Art Center which is the most important art center in the city, was opened in 2002 by Anadolu Kültür in collaboration with a civil enterprise. The Diyarbakır Culture and Art Festival is an annual event that is also worth mentioning here.
