Dutch-Turkish artists in the Netherlands

In both Holland and Germany there is Turkish youth who began making rap music with guidance of Turkish instruments. Turkish rap is dance music, and an example of a famous Dutch rapper is Yukki B. In March 2006 MC Yasin performed at a party in Rotterdam named Exelans HipHop Jam.
Onder Dogan (also known by his artist name Turk) is a Dutch rapper born in Amsterdam. He lived both in Madrid and Istanbul, where he listened a lot to hiphop music. Eventually he moved back to Eindhoven. In 2008 his first EP finished, ‘Turkse Pizza’. In spring 2010 the film ‘Gangster Boys’ was released wherein Onder Dogan plays a leading role.

DJ Kamuran is a Turkish-Dutch DJ. His music style is Electro/Turkpop.

DJ Hakan C. began in 1994 with small performances at studentverenigingen. It was in this period that the Turkish party scene slowly started to rise and DJ Hakan C. became one of the most experienced and famous Turkish DJs of Holland. Baraná is the musical crossover concept of Turkish singer and multi-instrumentalist Behsat Üvez and Dutch reed player Steven Kamperman. Baraná is a Turkish folkloric term referring to a meeting with improvised contributions by musicians, singers and poets. Since 2002 Baraná plays soulful innovative music, in which the power of Turkish tradition is connected to playful Dutch improvisation, with the meeting as an ongoing source of inspiration. By its nature Baraná collaborates intensively with Turkey in several ways. Turkish music, texts from Turkish poets and Turkish musicians form a fundamental part of the identity of Baraná. Baraná works with Dutch improvisers, Dutch musicians with Turkish roots and guest musicians from Turkey. Cultural collaboration between 2004-2010 are:
- Several-year collaboration with Istanbul resident Cengiz Baytemür, player of diverse Turkish traditional wind instruments, in Baraná & Co. Baraná & Co was founded as a result of a Dutch Music Meeting composition assignment in 2002, and performed in 2005 at the Akbank Caz Festival, Istanbul. Texts of the famous old Turkish poet Yunus Emre.
- 2009 Concerts in Bursa and Istanbul with Baraná Quintet. TRT television interview.
- 2010 collaboration with upcoming star popvocalist Ceylan Ertem (Istanbul) and photographer Doruk Kaya in the project Baraná Xenopolis, an ode to Istanbul, as a metaphor for the unlimited possibilities and fears of modern times, representing the conflict between the urban space and the individual.
- 2010 New CD Sarap coming out Octobre 2010 at the Turkish recordlabel Baykus, also label of the young famous group Gevende.
The Amsterdam-Turks Muziekkoor was founded in 2002, and is directed by Murat Ay. The choir has 20 members, and is conducted by 8 professional musicians on traditional Turkish instruments. They play light-classical Turkish songs.
The Rotterdams Turks Klassieke Muziekkoor has a rich repertoire from Turkish classical music. Especially light classical and fasil songs are often performed. The aim of the choir is to transfer their musical heritage to new generations, and to those who are interested in the Turkish and Mediterranean culture.
Fidan is a quintet around the Turkish-German singer Esra Dalfidan. Her voice and jazzy compositions are a mix of Turkish, European and American influences.
The 19-year old jazz singer and pianist Karsu Dönmez began playing the piano when she was seven years old, and made an impression because she played weekly at her parents’ Turkish restaurant Kilim. Karsu writes and componeert her own songs. She is not only famous in Holland, but also in Turkey.
Ilda Simonian has Armenian parents and is born in Turkey. With her ensemble she plays folk songs, which create sympathy with the Armenian part of the audience, but also has an appeal to those who are not familiar with Armenian folkmusic. She also uses church hymns in her music.
The compositions by Ogan Sadan, a Turkish basist living in Amsterdam, have a stimulating effect on the hearer. His compositions are a combination of jazz with Turkish, African and South-American influences. His band members, none of whom have the same nationality, also contribute to the sound.
For a while there have been inquiries from the Turkish community in Holland for a qualitative group of musicians who play sufimusic. The founders of Tevazu answered to this demand by combining their experiences in classical Turkish music with the rich suficulture. By now Tevazu exists for more than 7 years and gives concerts and performances both in Holland and abroad. They did not only attract attention from the Islamic, but also from non-Islamic circles.
Onur Ataman is a Turkish guitarist living in Holland. He performed on the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2006, as well as on the Turkey Now! Festival in 2007. Apart from western Jazz music, he is also inspired by Turkish folkmusic and sufi music. His Onur Ataman Ensemble gives both jazz concerts and concerts based on a Turkish sound. In 2010 he set up the rock band Planeur. Planeur had a successful performance on the Bevrijdingsfestival in The Hague.
Otantik consists of three band members who play Turkish folk, Turkish classical music, Turkpop and Arabesk.
Stichting Newa is focused on music and folk dancing, and was set up to make sure that traditional musical instruments don’t get lost. They have a music group which is very suitable for parties. The folkdance groups of Stichting Newa were champion Turkish folkdancing in the Netherlands in 2004 and 2005.
Hokkabaz is a band for parties, festivals and other festivities. This Rotterdam-Turkish band plays many types of music, from Turkish folk music and gypsy music to Turkish pop and arabesque.
Ömer Kadan is a blind componist and textwriter, singer and saz musician. He has been living in Almelo for years. Since Ömer Kadan sings both in Turkish and in Dutch, he focuses his music on both the Turkish and the Dutch market.
Sjahin During was born in Amsterdam in 1972, son of a Turkish mother and a Dutch father. He lived in Istanbul until the age of 6, when his family moved back to the Netherlands. At the age of 18 he discovered the beauty of percussion, and soon learnt how to make his own congas, batás, DJembés and cajón. After school, he received a grant from the Dutch Ministry of Culture and went for more than a year to Havana, Cuba, to study Latin and Afro-Cuban percussion. After 12 years of working with this music he felt the need for a new approach, and decided to go back to Istanbul to study the Anatolian and Oriental rhythms and instruments. He now tries to combine his knowledge to create his own sound, Afro Anatolian percussion & vocals.
Hasan Oguz Ozgök moved to Holland in 1970, when he was 13 years old. Ten years later he formed the Hasan Band. He would be the first Dutch musician who combined his Turkish musical background with other, western styles. He also became famous in Belgium, Germany and Turkey. Since 2000 he is involved in the Stichting Fanfara, who helps foreign youth and refugees in making music and in understanding the Dutch music scene.
In 1974, Dilaver Götas began to develop into a saz player. In 1977 he migrated to Holland, and in 1990 he founded the multicultural band Dilan. The drummer is Dutch, while the other two bandmembers have an Indonesian background. Göktas is a teacher and bandcoach at several schools in Noord-Brabant, and since 1997 he is part of the multinational Atlas Orchestra. He also leaded the cd-project Hitistan (Turkish pop from Brabant, 1998).
Melike performed in March 2007 at Podium Mozaiek. Melike is Turkish, but was born in Belgium, and together with her husband Osama Abdulrasol she founded the band Melike. They play Turkish troubadour songs but with Arabic, Turkish and European influences.
