'All about my maps' - art & design by Yomar Augusto
From April 13th until August 3rd GR-ID, museum for realising GRaphic IDeas in Groningen, the Netherlands, will show the exhibition ‘All about my maps’ by Yomar Augusto. The art and design of Brazilian graphic designer, typographer and artist Yomar Augusto, who lives and works in New York City, will be shown in the Netherlands for the first time.
Yomar combines traditional calligraphy and techniques like laser cutting and digital media. Through this he creates layered art pieces that make his work exciting and original. Besides his impressive project ‘All about my maps’, in which he cuts letters out of old maps and cityplans with a lasercutter, GR-ID will also show the development in his work from Brazil, New York and the Netherlands.
Yomar Augusto (1977) was born in Brazil and was educated as a graphic designer in Rio de Janeiro. In 2001 he studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He started his own design studio and followed the Master’s programme typography at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. He lived and worked in the Netherlands for eight years. After that he returned to Brazil for a short time.
Yomar made designs for companies like EMI, MTV, Adidas (FIFA world championships 2010) and many renowned international advertising agencies. He also taught typography at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Yomar Augusto now lives and works in New York City, where he has a thriving design studio and is working on commercial designs, typography, film and photography.
In the exhibition All about my maps, the project with the same name is the centrepiece. In this project the audience plays an essential and participative role. Yomar started the project in 2012 with the goal to connect people and their ideas about travelling and destinations. Based on four questions Yomar starts working. With old and found maps that correspond with the destinations and wishes of the people he translates the information into simple and enigmatic wall art and typographic art.
In every piece of art the old maps are combined with one of the four fonts that were especially designed for this project. Through the technique of laser cutting and the layering of maps with different designs according to the answers to the questions asked, Yomar creates unique and personal pieces of art in which audience and artist are connected and exciting images and typographic travels are created.
