Festas juninas in Tropenmuseum Junior
Every weekend in June, children and their families can participate in the festas juninas or June festival in Tropenmuseum Junior in Amsterdam. Visitors learn to dance the quadrilha, make forró music themselves and mix their own fruit cocktails.
The festas juninas are celebrated nationwide but are particularly associated with Northeastern Brazil. The annual festival is related to European Midsummer celebrations. It has a rural character with traditional clothing, foods and dance. Nowadays the festas juninas are popular in urban areas as well and among all social classes.
From 6 October 2012 until spring 2015, Tropenmuseum Junior presents MixMax Brasil. This interactive exhibition invites the public to discover the mix culture of Brazil. MixMax Brasil is focused on the rich culture of Pernambuco in Northeastern Brazil.
