Turing Foundation

Funding for exhibiting exceptional foreign loans in the Netherlands

The Turing Foundation is a private fund established in 2006 by Pieter and Françoise Geelen. The name Turing Foundation pays homage to the British scientist Alan Turing (1912-1954). The fund has four main spending goals: Art, Education, Nature Conservation, and Leprosy Control.

In the field of art, the Turing Foundation aims to allow more people in the Netherlands to enjoy visual arts. The fund supports Dutch museums in realizing exhibitions in the field of visual arts. The emphasis is on exhibiting exceptional foreign loans in the Netherlands. Occasionally, special art acquisitions are also supported.

Exhibitions:

  • The fund supports exhibitions in the fields of old, modern, and contemporary visual arts;
  • The fund only accepts applications submitted by Dutch museums;
  • The fund has a preference for:
     - Exhibitions from abroad and/or exhibitions with significant foreign loans;
     - Painting exhibitions;
     - Exhibitions that have the potential to reach a large audience or attract a new/different audience than the regular museum audience, without compromising the high quality of the exhibition.
  • The exhibition must have a demonstrable and significant significance for the museum's collection;
  • The fund only supports exhibitions on visual arts where the quality of the displayed works and the exhibition concept is undeniable;
  • The fund only supports exhibitions accompanied by a catalog (or publication) (ready at the time of the exhibition opening);
  • The application should preferably be submitted to the Turing Foundation at least one year before the exhibition's opening date;
  • The fund prefers museums with a solid marketing plan to reach new audiences alongside traditional visitors.
  • The fund values a realistic estimate of the expected number of visitors. Therefore, upon approval of the application by the Board, we disburse 80% of the donation immediately, and the remaining 20% after achieving the expected number of visitors. If the number of visitors falls short of the expectation by a percentage between 20% and 50%, 10% of the intended grant will not be disbursed. For a deviation of 50% or more, the remaining amount will not be disbursed;
  • In addition to Art, the Turing Foundation also supports projects in Biodiversity & Climate Change. Therefore, the fund is interested in museums' views on sustainability and request a brief explanation of their sustainability policy when applying for an exhibition.

Art Acquisitions:

  • The fund occasionally contributes to art acquisitions through art auctions and fairs that operate on a bidding system;
  • The fund only contributes in the form of an additional final bid;
  • The fund has a preference for art acquisitions supported by the Vereniging Rembrandt;
  • The fund contributes to the purchase of the work, not to transport or restoration costs.
