Dutch cartoonists take the streets in Angoulême.

The Netherlands is well represented at the 41st Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême (France) from January 30 to February 2.

One of the eleven main exhibitions is a retrospective of the work by Dutch artist Willem (Bernhard Holtrop): “Willem, ça c'est de la bande dessinée !” . This exhibition stems from the Grand Prix du Festival which Willem received during the previous edition of the festival.

Mobile exhibition of Dutch cartoonists
Next to this retrospective, The Netherlands is invited to organize a presentation. Under the title La bédé est dans la rue (the strip is on the street), twenty Dutch comic strip artists and illustrators are making ten to fifteen posters daily that are distributed throughout the city. This mobile exhibition changes every day. The cartoonists work in a studio built for the occasion in a central location at the festival , under the watchful eye of the public. The posters provide commentary on current issues in France and refer to the activist history of Willem, who participated in the student uprisings in Paris during the Sixties.

The delegation includes both established and promising names in the world of Dutch comics : Anne Steel, Eva Steel, Henk Kuijpers, Erik de Graaf, Paul Teng, Barbara Stok, Peter van Dongen, Hanco Kolk, Jan Cleijne, Flo Good, Maaike Hearts, Marcel Ruijters, Robert Raffe, Michiel van de Pol, Guido van Driel, Typex, Sam Peeters, Nanne Meulendijks, Aimee de Jongh, Erik Wielaert, Pieter Geenen, Andre Slob, Ype Driessen, Eric Hill, Jeroen Funke. The activities are organized by Joost Swarte & Willem (maîtres d'atelier) , Gert Jan Pos (direction) , Sjoerd van Ree & Robin Maatman (silkscreen printers) and Ruben Steeman (blog).
