Rousseff fights discrimination

Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil, holds her promise to end racism and discrimination in Brazil.  Last month the newspaper Folha de Sao Paolo unveiled her plan that aims to fully integrate blacks, people of mixed background and indigenous peoples into Brazilian society. Whites are a minority in Brazil. They count for 47.7% of the population.

There lies a proposal at the Congres-table, drawn up by the Rousseff government which states that half of all available places at public universities should be reserved for people from the target population. But Rousseff goes further. She now wants to implement positive discrimination in the labor market and in the cultural sector. For example, in giving priority to blacks and mestizos while hiring for jobs. The new Minister of Culture, Marta Suplicy, also created programs specifically aimed at the participation of the non-white populationto arts and culture in Brazil.
