Kunqu Opera and China Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre

Kunqu Opera, one of the oldest traditional operas in China, is regarded as the "father of Chinese operas". It originates from the Kunshan region, during the Ming Dynasty and may date back more than 600 years. Kunqu Opera integrates literature, theater, performance, music and dance. It is an outstanding representative of oriental art. Together with the ancient Greek tragedies and the Indian Sanskrit drama, Kunqu Opera is one of the three most classic performing arts. On 18 May 2001, Kunqu Opera was included in the first list of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of UNESCO. Its origin of cultural achievement and the special value of cultural diversity are thus recognized. The China Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre was founded on 22 June 1957. Under the leadership of the opera house director Han Shichang, the famous Kunqu artists present successful performances not only in China but also in the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Finland, Russia, Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, Spain, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc.
