Many young artists find inspiration and clients in Istanbul, the cultural heart of Turkey and home to several large cultural organisations. With all this creative and entrepreneurial energy in place, many European artists end up only visiting Istanbul.

However, Turkey is much bigger and has more to offer than only Istanbul. Our meeting is about this Other Turkey.

Three cultural operators from Izmir, Gaziantep and Diyarbakir will present their city and its cultural scene. These cities represent the diversity of Turkey, while at the same time they have common goals: to expand their capacity and to work with more international partners.

Speakers:

Recep Tuna worked at the Dutch Consulate General in İstanbul from 2005 until 2017,as senior policy advisor responsible for press, cultural affairs and civil society support programmes. After this intense period Recep moved to Izmir. Currently, he is the local coordinator of the Spaces of Culture project in Izmir. Also, he established a culture, arts and entertainment consultancy and organization company called Alla Tuna Concept.

Rawan Altakriti graduated from the Scenography department at the High Institute for Dramatic Arts in Damascus (Syria), then worked for several television series, cinema movies and theatre plays. In 2014, she started to work in civil society initiatives as a cultural consultant, were she combined civil society and culture. During this time she worked on various issues. In 2016, she moved to Gaziantep in Turkey and is currently the local coordinator of the Spaces of Culture project in this city.

Savaş Işık started his theatre career in 2004 in Diyarbakır with the play ‘’The children of that City’’. He got his acting degree from Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Art Theatre Department and directed various plays. He also organized and took part in various street performances. He is co-founder and currently art director of Mordem Art in Diyarbakir, where he continues working on theatre training and productions.

The meeting will be moderated by writer and publicist Özkan Gölpinar.

Our three speakers are in the Netherlands as part of a larger delegation. Fifteen visitors from these cities are in the Netherlands to expand their Dutch network and to exchange knowledge especially in the field of audience development.

This visitor programme is supported by DutchCulture and initiated and sponsored by the Spaces of Culture programme. A programme that provides spaces and resources for the realisation of cultural projects and the development of the cultural field in these three cities. The project is initiated by Goethe-Institut, the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul, the Embassy of the Netherlands and the Institut Français de Turquie; in cooperation with Anadolu Kültür and Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV).
