DutchCulture cordially invites you to attend the live event Rising from the ashes: recreating the National Museum of Brazil with special guest Alexander Kellner, director of the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. He will share with us a story of perseverance and resistance to keep Latin America’s biggest national and cultural history museum alive for future generations.

Two hundred years after it was founded, Brazil's oldest and most important historical and scientific museum was hit by a devastating fire in 2018. The National Museum in Rio de Janeiro lost a significant part of its collection. Notwithstanding, with full dedication the director and his team committed themselves to not only create a new museum but to stay connected with the public in entirely different ways. How did they deal with such unexpected circumstances? And what can we learn from their experiences?

About Alexander Kellner
Alexander Kellner is a Brazilian geologist and paleontologist who is a leading expert in the field of studying pterosaurs. Since 1997, he works at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, where he was recently reelected as director for 2022-2026.

Alexander Kellner is visiting the Netherlands at the invitation of DutchCulture, together with Thaís Mayumi, museologist/coordinator new exibitions at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro. The aim of their visit is to prospect partnerships and exchange knowledge on innovative and sustainable strategies that contribute to the research, preservation and exhibition of museum collections.
