Critics and Academics

The major issues and development areas in Turkish photography are the lack of any photography curators, with the exception of Mrs. Engin Özendes, who is in charge of the photography department at the Modern Museum of Art, and the fact that there are no photography critics.

Despite the increasing number of photography exhibitions and interest in this field, the art work is never evaluated by professional photography critics. The majority of the discussion unfortunately still revolves around technical aspects of photography which consequently hinders the development of intellectual and artistic taste. Many young photographers also feel unappreciated and lost due to the lack of artistic criticism when they are trying to progress in their art.
