Documentary Photography

NAR PHOTOS (http://www.narphotos.net/) is an idealistic and dedicated photography collective formed by 7 documentary photographers and is the only representative collective of documentary photography in Turkey today. They select their own themes and work on creating a narrative story that addresses a socio-political problem. They have previously participated in cross regional projects with Armenia where five Turkish and five Armenian photographers photographed Yerevan and Istanbul and the end result was a traveling exhibition which was exhibited in 14 cities. They also photographed Turkey’s frontier cities during Turkey’s discussions about accession to the European Union. They mainly publish their work in magazines such as National Geographic Turkey. Despite the high value of these photographs, very few photography galleries are interested in exhibiting documentary photography, since its style, mainly with political content, appeals to a limited crowd that may be potential buyers. Recent themes about which they have been shooting narrative photographic stories are Turkey’s recent energy investments; new hydroelectric power plants and how these power plants affect the lives of locals and minorities of Turkey.
