Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar: Sereen
Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962) is one of the founders of the modern Turkish novel and a great source of inspiration for authors such as Orhan Pamuk. With his vast knowledge of Western and Ottoman culture, he was one of the first who understood that Turkey can grow to become a modern state if it give its Ottoman legacy a place in the new nation. This suggestion was not appreciated by everyone. Presently his novels find, also outside Turkey, more and more readers.
This evening translator Hanneke van der Heijden and Petra de Bruijn, lecturer at the University of Leiden, will talk on Tanpinar and what makes him one of the founders of the modern Turkish novel.
The lecture is made possible by the Yunus Emre Institute - Amsterdam in collaboration with the University of Leiden (LUCIS and Turkish Studies) and SLAA
