Artlab Mixer - Marieke Warmelink
Convenant - Marieke Warmelink
ArtLab is another of Mixer’s key initiatives in solidifying further its relationship with international and local artists. ArtLab offers this usually-unseen aspect of an artist’s production process to a constantly rotating audience, offering them the opportunity to interact with the guest artist, and vice-versa. ArtLab is in collaboration with Manzara Perspectives, providing accommodation for participants.
Our inaugural guest artist, Marieke Warmelink arrived in Istanbul from The Netherlands on 5th March. She worked in Istanbul for four weeks which resulted in an exhibition. This exhibition will take place in the Mixer untill mid April.
Marieke reflects on current social issues and the role of the media through a combination of paintings, performance, video and installations. Marieke focuses on various themes, such as the struggle for power, a problem many of us face, and the progression and development akin to all of human life. Marieke’s work involves taking images from selected photographs, local newspapers and creating unique images in the form of three-dimensional objects, installations, interventions and paintings.
More recently, in 2012 Marieke took part in the maumau artist-in-residence programme in Turkey where she created a number of live installations that focused on Turkey’s recent political and social problems; such as the role of authority and the illusions surrounding it, while the audience was also invited to question ideas surrounding social structure and hierarchy.
Visitors to Mixer’s ArtLab will have the opportunity to see the production period during normal gallery opening days, between the hours of 14:00 – 19:00. The production period ended with a live performance of Radna Rumping. Radna Rumping is an Amsterdam based arts co-ordinator and programmer bringing together art, music, culture and various other forms of media as part of her role at ‘Non-Fiction’, the office for cultural innovation.
