AKINCI takes pleasure in inviting you to the opening of the exhibition with new works by Cevdet Erek on November 26, 5 - 8 pm. During the opening Cevdet Erek will give a performative talk 'Updating' about his work at 5 pm.

Cevdet Erek’s Rulers and Rhythm Studies (2007 – 2011) travels to AKINCI just after being shown at Untitled (12th Istanbul Biennial). Proposed by Adriano Pedrosa (co-curator, 12th Istanbul Biennial) and composed by Cevdet Erek, this version of the work consists of a 12 meters long table on which all existing ruler prototypes realized by Erek are placed in a linear order. The work was installed in the group show of the section called Untitled (History), which is one of the 5 sections of the Biennial. Pedrosa connects the display and Erek’s work as follows: “The exhibition occupies an elongated room, calling attention to the formal relationships between the narrative of time and the experience of space. The work of Cevdet Erek, which plays a pivotal role in the exhibition, very much relates to the articulation of time and space.”1 Rulers and Rhythm Studies includes the very early prototypes Ruler 1, Ruler 0 - Now and Ruler Coup (5000 copies of Ruler Coup were fabricated and given out to visitors during the Biennial) which were all produced for Erek’s A Few Retrospectives (AKINCI, 2008) as well as the fresh new ones like Ruler Biennial, Ruler Near, Ruler Rhythm and others. According to the artist, “These rulers are not timelines themselves, they are simple timeline makers.” This version of the collection will be shown at Update in dialogue with 7 and Rhythm 1, two new sound pieces which respond to temporalities which relate to two of the rulers.
Erek will also present Updating, a performative talk on the exhibited work as well as a brief update on the period after his move from Amsterdam back to Istanbul, following the research period at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten.

Cevdet Erek’s upcoming solo presentation will be held at Kunstahalle Basel in January 2012. Erek has participated in the 12th Istanbul Biennial, Istanbul (2011), and his work has been part of exhibitions in various international institutions including Tate Modern, London (2011), Arter, Istanbul (2011), Tanas, Berlin (2010), TBA21, Vienna (2010), Artists Space, New York (2009), Extra City, Antwerp (2009), Palais Des Beaux Arts de Lille (2009), Museum Paviljoens, Almere (2009), Stedelijk Musem CS, Amsterdam (2006), Platform Garanti, Istanbul (2005), ZKM, Karlsruhe (2004), 8th Istanbul Biennial (2003), Museum of Modern Art Saitama (2003).
