City Conversation: Exploding China, New Megacities
Architect Daan Roggeveen lives and works in Shanghai. He has been in the Netherlands this month to talk about the Go West Project, a research and design studio focusing on emerging megacities in the world, and specifically, in China.
In 2011, together with journalist Michiel Hulshof he published the book 'How the City Moved to Mr Sun - China's New Megacities'. This book is entirely devoted to the 'unknown' Chinese megacities like Wuhan (10 million inhabitants), Shijiazhuang (9 million) and Chongqing (33 million). It shows that these cities are experimenting with new urban and social models in a way of forward thinking, which is unprecedented in Europe.
In Pakhuis de Zwijger, Daan Roggeveen will illustrate how their book is the basis for new projects of Go West inside and outside China: the construction of a mixed-use building near Shanghai, a proposal for a special economic zone in the Netherlands and a review of Chinese urban models in emerging metropolises in Africa.
