Concert - Turcaria 1683
Date(s)
Tuesday 2 September 2014 00:00
Located on the borders of Europe, Vienna was vulnerable to attack from the vast Ottoman Empire. In 1683, the Turkish army stood again at the gates, but after a siege lasting weeks, the Turks were defeated, to the great relief of the Viennese.
Armonico Tributo, prized for its fresh and colourful performances, plays the crackling battaglias that reported the siege and sorrowful lamentos and alla turca court dances of Schmelzer, Fux and Biber. The music of the Turkish prince Dimitrie Cantemir will be performed by the eight-man ensemble of Kudsi Erguner, the great master of traditional sufi music.
