Across Europe, artists, designers and cultural practitioners are experimenting with ways of sharing resources, risks, responsibilities and knowledge. FAIR P(L)AY brings these practices into conversation with perspectives from education, policy and different European contexts, asking what collective action might mean for the people doing creative work, and what it could change about the systems around them.

FAIR P(L)AY takes place within the context of The Collective Response: Design for Shared Action, the exhibition at Foundation We Are exploring how creative practices can build collaboration, community and collective action.

Emma Verhoeven is an artist, designer, writer, organiser and educator living and working in Rotterdam. As a founder and member of Extra Practice, she is passionate about creating collective space and time for playful self-reflection and experimental learning. She regularly organises and hosts workshops and events at Extra Practice. Extra Practice is a space for working and learning in the north of Rotterdam, shared by six friends active in art and design. The members support one another’s individual practices and organise workshops, presentations and public events to share insights and experiences.
 

Dovilė Gaižauskienė is a Lithuanian design researcher and strategic and participatory design practitioner working at the intersection of design, public innovation and societal transformation. She is a researcher at KTU D-LAB and Sector Manager at the GovTech Innovation Agency, and co-founder of the co-creation atelier Viktorija Vilis ir ko.

With over two decades of experience in design, education and innovation, Dovilė has worked across public policy, social innovation, cultural development and community engagement. Her practice explores co-creation, participatory futures, trust-building and community-centred innovation, connecting people, institutions and possible futures through design.
 

Pedro Lobo is a Portuguese graphic designer, visual artist and artistic researcher based in Eindhoven. His practice centres on activating messages through visual communication, with a collaborative and dialogical approach at its core. He works across visual identity, art direction, design strategy, editorial and web design, and moving image, with a strong focus on storytelling.

Pedro holds an MA in Fine Art and Design from the Critical Inquiry Lab at Design Academy Eindhoven and a BA in Communication Design from ESAD – Escola Superior de Artes e Design
 

Luiza Moroz is Head of Policy at Culture Action Europe, where she contributes to the organisation’s advocacy strategy, monitors European policy developments and conducts research to support its work. Her background includes the Ukrainian Centre for Cultural Research, the Ukraine Ministry of Culture and the European Commission’s DG GROW. As a policy analyst, she has worked on developing policy and analytical frameworks for the creative industries in Ukraine.

Her work connects cultural practice with European policy, with a focus on transformative cultural policies and the conditions that enable culture and creative work to thrive.

FAIR P(L)AY is a programme series initiated by EUNIC Netherlands in 2022, bringing together European national cultural institutes to explore fair practice in the creative and cultural sectors. Since its first edition the series has grown into an annual conversation at Dutch Design Week connecting emerging and established practitioners with tools, networks and perspectives from across Europe.

EUNIC Netherlands is a cluster of European national cultural institutes based in the Netherlands. We believe that cultural exchange across borders should be fair, reciprocal and grounded in real needs, not just goodwill. FAIR P(L)AY is how we put that belief into practice: by creating space where artists, designers, policymakers and funders from different European contexts can learn from each other, challenge the systems they work within, and build something more durable together.
