Istanbul has been around a few thousand years, but in the last few years, it experienced an explosive growth. As the Gezi Park protest showed, not all Istanbullu are excited about this. Jan Rath talks about "the growth of the great work city' and its cramps and growing pains.

Prof. Dr. Jan Rath received his MA Degree in cultural anthropology and urban studies and his PhD from Utrecht University. He is now Professor of Sociology, Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Member of the Center for Urban Studies and the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) in the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) at the University of Amsterdam.
