Together with the Escola de Cidade, DutchCulture is presenting a seminar on urban development and rezoning in São Paulo.

Brazil has a number of megacities, some of which have to contend with huge spatial problems. This is true for the historical inner city of São Paulo, which suffers from vacancy, poor living conditions, illegal residency, the deterioration of valuable historical buildings, crime and drug abuse.

Over the years, Saõ Paulo’s city government has attempted to fix these problems in different ways, with varying success. The city is interested in learning about how old city centres are revitalised in the Netherlands. The Dutch approach focuses on combining a variety of disciplines – heritage, social science, architecture and urban planning – in public-private partnerships.

During the seminar, Dutch and Brazilian experts will share the stage. The speakers include Paul van Meurs (Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and TU Delft), Jaap Klaarenbeek (subject to change; works for Posad, an agency for strategic spatial issues) and Sander Troost (subject to change; works for gmp architekten, an internationally operating German architectural practice with a branch in Brazil, among other places).
