Theater RAST plays "Dilek" in Turkey
Dilek
‘Dilek, a victim but also a heroine’
Dilek is a teenage girl who is in love with a boy. Their love is completely innocent. Her parents want to give her in marriage to another family. When Dilek has been seen together with the boy she loves, rumours starts. ‘Because a girl who is in company of boys, cannot be a virgin any more’, so is said by the community. People starts to talk about her. This is a serious violation of the family’s honour and the overture of a terrible tragedy.
A heartbreaking story about a girl who is stuck between tradition, belief and the honour of her family. Assisted by three djinns (spirits) she tries to follow her heart. Father, mother, her brother and other family members take shape of a merciless whirlpool where she is imprisoned in.
‘Music of Anatolia is like fado and flamengo, it comes straight from the heart’
In Dilek authentic folk songs of Anatolia are mixed with elements from the classic western opera. The 24 opera songs are being accompanied by 6 musicians who play traditional and modern instruments like the saz (a lute), the ney (a flute), kemenche, clarinet, violoncello and percussion. Also the classical songs await a confrontation with modern rap. To put it briefly, it is a defiantly musical mix of classic versus modern.
