Turcksche boucken - Paper Marbling
Turcksche boucken. The Oriental Collection of Levinus Warner, Dutch diplomat in Istanbul is a collaboration project between Leiden University and Museum Meermanno to mark 400 years of relations between the Netherlands and Turkey. This is the first time for a great many years that a magnificent collection of Oriental manuscripts is on display to the public. The manuscripts were collected by Levinus Warner (c. 1618−1665), the Dutch Republic’s ambassador in Istanbul, in the mid-seventeenth-century.
Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferred to an absorbent surface, such as paper or fabric. Through several centuries, people have applied marbled materials to a variety of surfaces. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy,
In the workshop the marble artists Yusuf Akaya and Elsje van der Ploeg combine the techniques of Turkish Ebru and Japanese Suminagashi technique into what they call Ebrusumi. With this new combination they achieve wonderful results.
