Everywhere

Everywhere

Dance in the Netherlands is increasingly finding its place outside the confines of the theatre: on location. From churches to factory buildings, from farmyard barns to waste-processing plants, everywhere you look choreographers are discovering the added value of working on location, despite the attendant rigours and technical limitations. They study the location for its spatial architecture, its social or historic significance, the presence of human capital (communities) or its suitability for holding a public dance parade. The atmosphere, the history, the significance all are used as a stem upon which the choreography can be grafted. Whereas in the past it was mainly adventurers and experimental modern dance and movement theatre companies who performed in the open air and at rugged locations, now mainstream groups – both professional and amateur – have discovered the opportunities and added value provided by dancing at an unusual location. So you can find dance everywhere in the Netherlands; you don’t even have to go looking for it.
