Fashion is a business
The interest in fashion shown by museums of modern art in the Netherlands is an exceptional phenomenon. Here fashion is often presented as a form of visual art. This is another example of unexpected Dutch exuberance that follows a different line to the rest of the World and is the result of often generous, long-term support by the government, local authorities and various funds.
Fashion is a serious business, and is sometimes taken very seriously indeed in the Netherlands, in study programmes and training courses. There is a whole range of magazines and television programmes that either focus on or are influenced by fashion, and there are a countless number of unique fashion events. However, what it has mainly led to is the unconventionality on the streets of the larger cities and a source of inspiration for major international fashion brands. No mean achievement for such a small country as the Netherlands!
