Dutch Foundation for Literature: Development grant for literary translators

Funding for literary translators who wish to develop their entrepreneurship

The Dutch Foundation for Literature is the national fund for Dutch literature, based in Amsterdam (Netherlands). The fund is one of the 6 national cultural funds in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Through this development grant, the Dutch Foundation for Literature invests in the entrepreneurship of literary translators in Dutch, Frisian, Papiamentu or Papiamento. A translator can choose a form of education, coaching, or guidance that fits their professional development at that moment. A study trip or a stay in a translator's residence abroad, can also be submitted. This grant allows translators to expand their role as an ambassador for a specific language area and to make a significant contribution to the diversity of literary offerings in the Netherlands.

 A maximum of €2,500.

Requirements

The applicant

  • previously received a project grant from the Dutch Fund for Literature;
  • completed one of the following translation courses after 2010 and have demonstrably taken steps towards building a career as a literary translator
    • Master Literary Translation, Utrecht University, or KU Leuven;
    • Vertalersvakschool Amsterdam;
    • Master Translation with a specialization in literary translation, Leiden University;
    • Master Translation (Linguistics), University of Amsterdam;
    • Master Translation in Europe, University of Groningen;
    • Supervised trajectory at the Expertise Center for Literary Translation (development trajectory, mentorship);
    • Short course in literary translation from the Expertise Center for Literary Translation or the Vertalersvakschool (from a language for which no multi-year translation course is offered).
  • published one or more translations in a literary magazine subsidized by the Dutch Foundation for Literature, or completed a mentoring program at a literary festival that has received a two- or four-year subsidy from the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

Applications will be processed between February 1 and December 1. The processing time is a maximum of 8 weeks.
