Indonesia: The People Behind the Seawall

Indonesia: The People Behind the Seawall

On 13 April, the exhibition ‘The People Behind the Seawall’ was opened by the Dutch Ambassador at the Erasmus Huis in Jakarta, Indonesia

The exhibition shows how four citizens and their families are dealing with water-related challenges, such as land subsidence, floods, heavy rainfall, waste, pollution and lack of drinking water. They live in the historic district of Northern Jakarta, behind the current old seawall, where the threat of flooding is most severe. Photographer Cynthia Boll (1972) followed the lives of these four affected families and documented their personal stories.

The exhibition is an initiative by Utarakan Jakarta (‘Speak Up Jakarta’). This project is supported by the Shared Cultural Heritage Matching Fund. The exhibition will run until 13 May
