The Historical and Geographical Institute of Paraíba (IHGP) was founded as non-profit cultural entity in 1905 in Paraíba, capital of Paraíba do Norte, by a group of prominent intellectuals and politicians and under the incentive of the military engineer Álvaro Lopes Machado, president of the State. Its purpose is to promote and disseminate studies, opinions and research on history and geography within the State of Paraíba, as well as its auxiliary and related sciences, contributing to a better knowledge of the reality of Paraíba under historical, geographic, political and social and economic aspects. Over the last (more than) hundred years, IHGP has accumulated significant collections of material and achievements.
