
The Kaluga Regional Art Museum is situated in the center of Kaluga. It was founded in 1917. The first displays in museum were the works from the private collection of doctor Vasiliev who has presented it to his native town Kaluga. In 1917-1920 the local nationalized collections were placed in the charge of the Kaluga Art Museum. The Museum opened in 1918. The nucleus of the Museum collection consist of oil paintings, graphics, decorative and applied arts. Museum has an interesting collection of icons and Russian wood sculptures by the XVI-XVII centuries masters. Visitors can see pictures by such artists as Shishkin, Tropinin, Surikov, Yuon, Yaroshenko, Polenov, Korovin, Aivazovsky and others. The museum is displaced in the ancient house, which was built for Ivan Bilibin - the well-known local merchant.
