The Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum was founded in 1896. The collection was formed from different sources; such as gifts by private collectors, artists, St. Petersburg Academy of Arts; nationalized private collections of local merchants and nobility from palaces, mansions and estates in the Nizhny Novgorod province; re-distributed and transferred works of art from some Central Metropolian Museums: The Tretyakov Art Gallery; the State Hermitage; Pushkin State Fine Arts Museum, the State Russian Museum.

Nowadays, the Nizhny Novgorod Museum of Art is recognized to be one of the largest Museums in the whole of Russia. Its collection numbers more than 10.000 exhibits, and among them there are paintings, graphical and sculptural works as well as pieces of folk and decorative art.
