Mainstream Theater
Theatre in Turkey is mostly dominated by National and Municipality Theatres which are centrally organized and funded by the government. The plays produced by these theatres which are mostly dependent on government policies and also the plays produced by private theatres which depend on box office because of minimal support from government, create a mainstream theatre atmosphere dominated by reproductions and adaptations of classical texts from ancient tragedies to Shakespeare’s plays and many other established theatre pieces by predominant playwrights of theatre history of Turkey and mostly of the world. While the state funded theatres of National and Municipal Theatres attract the attention of the audience by a guarantee of governmental prestige, the private theatres use famous actors and actresses on TV to attract audience attention.
