* NOTE about WeChat / Weixin:
China’s performing arts industry, both official and independent, currently use the Chinese social media platform “Weixin” (English: WeChat) to publicize their activities and share information about their works. Personal / individual accounts operate much like Facebook/Twitter accounts, and larger “official” accounts for organizations operate like newsletters and websites to which people can subscribe for information and regularly posted updates.
Almost every arts organization and individual in this report currently has both a personal and an official WeChat account, whereas only a limited number maintain websites. There are numerous WeChat groups that publicize information about small-scale, independent and other non-commercial / more contemporary works, conferences, and events. These are the best source of the most updated and accurate information about what is going on in any given city at any given time. However, the accounts are almost exclusively in Chinese, which creates challenges for Western readers to access information.
