Mapping China: Music - New Media

 

Whether you are a rock band, DJ, promotor or management agency, if you are considering entering the Chinese market, sooner rather than later you will find yourself doing the following:

  • Open social networking accounts, primarily Weibo and Wechat (official account), post news, amass followers, interact with fans and promote upcoming events in China. In short, what you do on Facebook all over again.
  • Upload promotional videos to Chinese video streaming websites, perhaps select one partner who can provide additional exposure. In short, what you do on Youtube all over again.
  • Survey whether your music is available on Chinese streaming websites, and consider opening a Douban Station, Xiami Musician or similar account. In short, what you do on Spotify, Soundcloud, Reverbnation and/or Bandcamp all over again.

This section will put these obvious points of entry in context, and provide a general overview of China’s unique media ecology, with special attention to the relatively rare companies that have developed services for musicians and music companies.
