Mardin has preserved the Arab-style architecture of its houses. Since it is located in a volcanic area, the basic material used in local architecture is the volcanic rock. The most important feature of these houses is the decorations carved in doors, windows and small columns called ‘Midyat Work’. Syrian Orthodox gold and silver smiths, whose work is famous throughout the country, still practice their craft here. Their workshops side by side with those of Muslim copper smiths. Along with the buildings in which they work, it is to be hoped that this living culture will be preserved.

In the STGM database a total of 108 NGO’s was listed of which 7 were dedicated to education and youth, 9 to culture and 3 to arts.

Events and organizations that are relevant for art and culture in Mardin are:

-          Duncan Centre Conservatory (Prague) is developing a dance project with the women attending one of the social NGOs.

-          Music groups from Marseille are considering collaborative projects with local musicians in Mardin.

-          Mardin and Ordu are more advanced in terms of cultural management and twinning.

-          ÇATOM (Multi-Purpose Community Center) based on the findings of the research project entitled ‘Women’s Status in the GAP Region and their integration to the process of development. They are interested in doing more projects.

-          Etkin Art Centre

-          Local Agenda 21 Theatre Groups

-          Mardin Municipality Folk Dance Groups: Group Göç, Group Berzi, Group Sav.

-          ÇGSG directs dance and music performances. ‘Uzun Yolu’ Kuştepe.
