2011 Ano da Holanda no Brasil / Year of Holland in Brazil

2011 Ano da Holanda no Brasil / Year of Holland in Brazil

(Above video shows the opening of the festival in March 2011 in Brasília).

The year 2011 will be a year of special importance for Brazil-Holland relations: we will be celebrating ´Ano da Holanda no Brasil´. We have good reasons to do so: Brazil is an emerging world power and of growing importance for the Netherlands. Holland is already the second biggest investor in Brazil and it is expected that within 10 years Brazil will be the 5th biggest world economy. Brazil is a country where big potential is to be found in political, economical and cultural fields. In 2014 the World Cup will be organized, followed by the Olympic Games in 2016. These events will be giving an extra impulse to the development of the country and big investments in infrastructure will be demanded. Given the emergence of Brazil as a new world power many countries are trying to emphasize their presence in Brazil. For instance, in 2009 France organized the "Year of France in Brazil”. Due to the fact that such promotion yields considerable results countries like Italy (2011/2012 Momento Italia Brasil), China, Germany (2010/2011 German Brazilian Year of Science, Technology and Innovation) and Sweden have recently organized similar events or will be asking for extra attention for their presence in and relations with Brazil.

By intensifying bilateral relations with Brazil in 2011, Holland hopes to get more attention. In cooperation with other partners, the Dutch diplomatic network would like to emphasize the possibilities that Holland has to offer. Brazil is experiencing strong growth in sectors in which Holland excells, like logistics, transport, fuels, agriculture, education and culture. The Netherlands is an important importer of Brazilian products and is at the same time the second biggest investor in Brazil. Therefore it is opportune to celebrate ‘2011’, also emphasizing Holland’s innovative character.

the 100 year anniversary of Carambeí

An important event that will be of assistance in trying to draw Brazil’s attention will be the celebration of the 100 year anniversary of Carambeí, one of the first Dutch agricultural colonies in Brazil. The celebration of 100 years of Dutch immigration also receives support from the Brazilian government. On the initiative of MP Luis Carlos Hauly from Paraná, legislation was proposed in July 2010 (PL-6498/2009) which officially proclaimed 2011 "Ano da Holanda no Brasil". Brazil wishes to pay attention to ‘Ano da Holanda’, not just domestically, but also in the Netherlands. The ministries of tourism, culture, industry and commerce will be involved in the realization of this initiative. The colonies themselves will be organizing several festivities and this opportunity will be used by the Dutch diplomatic representation to at the same time present the Holland of 2011; Holland with all her political, cultural and economic facets; modern, innovative, high-tech etc. In 2011 the Dutch network, comprising the embassy in Brasilia, the consulates-general in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the ´Netherlands Business Support Offices´ (NBSO) in Porto Alegre and Recife and the honorary consulates will be organizing several activities, at times joining or extending on the activities organized by the colonies. Other initiatives are very welcome as well.

intensified relations

In recent years the Netherlands have intensified relations through a growing number of ministerial visits and trade missions and the interest of several Dutch ministries is expected to further increase. Above all, new governments in both Holland and Brazil, offer a further opportunity to further strengthen ties between the two countries. ‘Ano da Holanda no Brasil 2011’ will be the perfect moment for this. Soon the website for ‘Ano da Holanda no Brasil 2011’ will be launched.
