Brazilian art in the Netherlands

The Olympics in Rio this summer are a good reason for organising a nice range of Brazilian cultural activities in museums and venues in Netherlands.

In the following months several events celebrate Brazilian arts in the Netherlands.

Architecture and visual arts
Currently on display in art centre Stroom, Another Reality. After Lina Bo Bardi in which six artists share their vision on the Brazilian architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi. The exhibition is held until 3 July.

Kunsthal KadE in Amersfoort represents the work of 35 contemporary Brazilian artists who comment on the economic, political, social and ecological context of Brazil. The exhibition Soft Power. Arte Brasil takes place from 21 May until 28 August.

Brasil will also be the central theme of a large art event of Museum Beelden aan Zee from 26 May until 2 October. The exhibition Brasil, Beleza?! (urban slang for what’s up?) will be a tribute to modern Brazilian sculptures of 27 artists.

Traditional Mauritshuis will, as an exception to her rule, exhibit the work of modern Brazilian artist Vik Muniz in The Hague from 9 June until 4 September. The exhibition Vik Muniz: Verso doesn’t show the fronts but the backsides of famous paintings like Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Music
Brazilian music also stands out in this summer season. Sambista and singer-songwriter Paulinho da Viola will perform in Brasil Sinfônico at Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest on 2 and 3 June.

Viva Brasil Festival in Amsterdam presents the queen of Brazilian axé Ivete Sangalo and sambista Martinho da Vila on 25 May and 26 June.

The Bimhuis in Amsterdam will host the Brazilian Summer Sessions 2016 in three nights from 14 May until 9 July. This year a special edition is dedicated to 100 years of Samba of Rio de Janeiro and the renowned artists Moyséis Marques and Roberta Sá will participate.
