Dutch Creative Sector Receives Almost €2 Million in European Support

The European Commission recently announced the results of four calls for proposals under the Creative Europe programme.

The Dutch audio-visual and cultural sector is receiving almost €2 million for Slate Funding (a series of 3 to 5 film and television projects), Video Games, Literary Translations and European Platforms.

Almost €700,000 for the development of film and television projects
All four of the proposals submitted by Dutch film and television producers under the category ‘Slate Funding’ for the development of 3 to 5 film and television projects have been accepted, for a total of almost €700,000. The Dutch producers are Circe Plans, Johan Nijenhuis & Co, BosBros and Pieter van Huystee Film & TV Produkties. Overall, 75 proposals from 20 European countries were accepted for an awarded amount of almost €12 million.              

€500,000 for Dutch game developers
Four Dutch game developers will be receiving a total of almost €500,000 to develop video games. This is 14.7% of the entire budget (almost €3.5 million). After the United Kingdom, the Netherlands received the highest amount of money in this category. The genre that is represented best is adventure games, partly because of their narrative character, which is one of the most important requirements of this call for proposals. The most popular platforms are the PC, smart phone and tablet. The four Dutch game developers are the Vanguard Entertainment Group, with the project ‘Game Gurus’; Digital Dreams, with ‘Complex’; Codeglue, with ‘Antegods’; and Kenney.nl, with ‘The Nights Willow’.

€200,000 for Dutch publishers
Two Dutch publishers are receiving European support for Literary Translations. Uitgeverij de Geus is getting a contribution for the project ‘Forging European Citizenship through Literature’ and the publishing house World Editions is receiving funding for ‘The World is Our Oyster’. De Geus publishers are translating 10 books into Dutch, including works by the authors Marcos Giralt Torrente (Spain), Thomas Rydahl (Denmark) and Evy Wyld (United Kingdom). Ten Dutch titles published by World Editions will be translated into English, including 'De Nederlandse Maagd' by Marente de Moor. In this category, a total of 58 accepted proposals are receiving over €6 million.

€500,000 for Eurosonic Noorderslag
Eurosonic Noorderslag, a European music platform based in Groningen, is receiving a subsidy of €500,000 under the ‘European Platforms’ call for proposals. The Dutch Eurosonic Noorderslag festival acts as coordinator of the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP 3.0), consisting of 13 European partners (from 11 different countries). ETEP stimulates the development of the careers of European pop artists outside their own countries. Each year, the ETEP platform organises over 300 performances at major European festivals. In this call for proposals, only three European platforms were selected, for a total of more than €1.4 million in funding. The other two platforms are Future Architecture (Slovenia) and Literary Europe Live (United Kingdom).
